Rebecca Fernandes was born in India, grew up in Canada and now works internationally. From 2015 to 2019, xe practiced as an artist and teacher of live coded music with the opensource platform Sonic Pi. The basis of xyr work lies in using accessible tools to produce music and installations. This sentiment is reflected in xyr digital performances and projects under the avatar, Raia. Raia is a founding member of Algorave India (2018), and creates original live coded compositions in Sonic Pi with vocal layering. Being internet- + auto-didactic in music and coding, xe brings a unique outlook to live coding production. The resulting effects are lyrical parodies, enveloped by code, with the potential to connect.
Since 2020, Raia's work has been evolving to (a) include strong visual elements to accompany live coded music, (2) use sonic production based on real world data, and (z) install physical interactive pieces. Recent support and funding comes from Flux Factory (NYC '22), Snug Harbor's New House for Contemporary Art (NYC, '22), and Canada Council for Arts (2023). A current proposed project, 'en(DNA)gered species how they connect, in symphonies' is a geographical soundscape of ecosystems featuring audio mnemonics created using DNA barcode data of endangered and at risk species from around the world. The ultimate aim is to continue storytelling with code(s). |
